BREAKFAST: MEAL OF THE CHAMPS
Breakfast, at least in the Western sense of the word, was long a forgotten item in Bangkok. To be sure, it was available in the pricey buffet restaurants of most of the city's hotels, but it was seldom to be found in stand-alone restaurants. There were a few pubs serving predictable and unimaginative British and American breakfasts, but that was about it.
Thanks to the rapidly evolving culinary scene in Bangkok, this has changed remarkably. Several places have sprung up that specialize in breakfast and some older places have added breakfast items to their menus and now open earlier.
We decided to take a look at some of the breakfasts on offer and report back about what we discovered. Most of the restaurants visited open early and serves the meal before 9:00 a.m. with the exception of the one housed in a mall which opened at 10:00 a.m.
Before looking at specific restaurants, some general observations are in order. We were impressed with what we found. A majority of the restaurants served above average food in pleasant surroundings. In addition, for reasons we can really explain, the service was a cut above what we typically find at other times of the day. Smiles and efficiency were found everywhere and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves.
We also found the restaurant manager's more passionate about what they are doing than is typical. They were much more approachable than usual and virtually all of them went on at length about their plans for the future and ideas that they had to make things better.
In short, having breakfast out on the town was an enjoyable experience and something we are now determined to do more often, please note that this is just the tip of the iceberg and there are plenty more lovely places for breakfast in the city.
