VEGETARIAN & VEGAN FRIENDLY RESTAURANTS
Vegetarian food sometimes gets a bum rap from the monotony of the poorly prepared smoothies, bean burgers and banana pancakes endlessly consumed by backpackers around the world. Vegetarian food doesn’t have to be this way as we discovered when we visited some of the vegetarian and vegan restaurants in Bangkok noted for being unique and different.
In the past people ate vegetarian food for religious reasons or because they felt eating animals and animal products was morally wrong. Their diets were often criticized by the scientific community and others as being unhealthy. We were told we needed protein to maintain strong and healthy bodies.
But then things began to change. Scientific studies started showing that eating too much meat and fat could lead to strokes, heart attacks, cancer and other health problems. To maintain and promote health, people were told they should eat more fresh fruits and vegetables.
This, in turn, led to dramatic changes in eating habits. The French, for example, developed a whole new slate of dishes that minimized fat and emphasized healthy fresh ingredients. People started eating vegetarian food not only for moral reasons, but because it was good for them and in the process often discovered that they really liked what they were eating.
Today, it is difficult to find a large restaurant that doesn’t have a selection of dishes labelled ‘vegetarian’. And vegetarian restaurants, once the province of vegans and vegetarians, are now frequently visited by carnivores seeking good healthy food and variety in their diet.
These changes have caused innovation and dramatic increase in quality. Vegetarian restaurants are not what they use to be. To understand what we mean, try one of the restaurants we visited for this article. Most are exciting and different - and as we discovered, the food is often delicious.
