The influence and the prestige of the Bangkok food scene has been on the rise over the past few years and the arrival of Urbani Truffle Bar & Restaurant is a prime example of this shift. While the name of this exciting new venture declares its showcasing of luxury gourmet ingredients , it also stakes it claim as the world’s first full service restaurant venue featuring the famous Urbani truffles from Perugia, Italy. Italy. The Urbani family has cultivated this highly coveted fungus for six generations and today control 705 market share of all the truffles sold around the globe. “This restaurant is the first of its kind although the family has several intention shops where you can buy fresh truffles and prepackage items,” shared Roberto Ugolini Director of Urbani, “The Urbani family could have opened a restaurant up anywhere in the world, and Bangkok is where they decided to do it. We only serve the best fresh truffles here and are launching the first of many restaunts to come”.
Urbani absolute nailed it when it comes to its décor and location on the 39th floor of Sathorn Square. The 360 degree views are spectular and the décor is sophisticated, yet warm and inviting. The entrance leads into a well massive marble topped full serve bar area with floor to ceiling windows, and walls lined with wine bottles and gourmet Urbani merchandise. It’s an ideal place to have a cocktail or two after work, or before moving on to a full meal in the adjacent dining room. Black and white photos, a design palette of dark woods, stone, leather and glass all set against the amazing views. The open aromatic open kitchen lets you know you are in for a gastronomic treat, while the fresh white orchids and shimmer candle light let you know that they are paying attention to the deals.
Set menus are the only option currently available, and you have a choice between a 3 course, a 5 course and a vegetarian choice with or without wine pairing. We opted for the 5 course with wine pairing and were not disappointed. We started with an ice cold glass of Chandon champagne and the luxurious and silky Truffle Foie Gras Terrine. Next was the truly decadent Homemade Agnolotti pasta stuffed with Wagyu beef and served with truffle bearnaise sauce. The chewy pasta, rich sauce and savory beef are a truly magical combination. This was paired with Santa Margherita semi-sweet Pinot Grigio, although a sharp Saigon Blanc or a Merlot or Shiraz would have paired better, Next up was the best dish of the night the Dover Sole w/ Truffled Chermoula. This dish was a revelation, beautifully plated, sublime in its simplicity while perfectly balancing its flavor profiles. For main course we were treated to a stunningly well executed Sous Vide Lamb Tenderloin w/ Fresh Herbs, Micro Greens & Truffle Relish paired with a robust Chateau Lalene Bordeaux Superieur 2014. Dessert consisted of their signature White Truffle Tiramisu with Liquid Nitrogen Berry Crumble. This is a show stopper, that tastes as good as it looks and one of the most innovate version of this classic favorite you will have the pleasure of enjoying.
Overall, this was a thoroughly satisfying meal, Urbani is more than generous when it comes to showering each dish with fresh shaved truffles and the use of this star ingredient is never used superfluously. Urbani offers a cohesive fine dining experience with service, cuisine, atmosphere and views. Open for both lunch and dinner, it’s a first class establishment that delivers on every level.
